About the book

The Contented Toddler Years covers eight key areas of concern for parents:

The Second Year (12 to 24 months)
A child’s second year is filled with challenges. He is learning to be more physically independent, to make himself understood, to make choices about what to eat, to feed and undress himself and to play and share with other toddlers. Gina offers very specific advice on helping your toddler to manage these changes. She also addresses common sleeping problems that can develop at this age, including the change to the big bed.

The Third Year (24 to 36 months)
The challenges faced by this age group include forming friendships with other children, starting nursery or pre-school, learning to share and take more responsibility for their actions, bladder and bowel control and potty training. Gina guides parents through all of this and includes advice on teaching new skills, tackling the most common fears, approaching pre-school education, dealing with bad behaviour and encouraging good behaviour and manners. Detailed advice on potty training can be found here.

The Power of Play
Gina puts great emphasis on your child’s enjoyment of learning in a relaxed and stimulating environment. She advises on how to encourage a variety of fun activities including physical play, reading, creative play, problem-solving play and social play. She explains why she does not recommend vast amounts of toys, excessive television watching or scheduling too many activities for young children.

Mother Care, Other Care
Gina tackles what is for many mothers, a major dilemma regarding the balance of childcare and work in their lives. She offers support and reassurance as she examines the three main options: nanny, childminder or nursery and includes invaluable checklists to help you in your choices.

Routines for Toddlers (12 to 36 months)
As your toddler develops he needs less daytime sleep, but also needs to avoid becoming overtired. This chapter provides four routines in the CLB-style to help parents spot the signs their child is ready to cut back on sleep and get the balance right. Gina advises on what a typical day’s menu should look like at each stage of development and makes practical suggestions about toys, activities and games appropriate to each age group.

The New Baby
A crucial chapter in the book includes Gina’s supportive and realistic advice about planning a new baby, what to expect from the age gap and getting help in the early days. She shows how to adapt her famous routines to accommodate a baby and toddler and gives great advice on how to breastfeed and manages a toddler. Her tips for avoiding sibling rivalry are essential reading.

Habits the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Gina suggests ways to encourage good habits such as hand-washing and teeth-cleaning and tidiness from an early age, thus avoiding problems in the future She also advises parents on how to tackle nail biting, whingeing, nose-picking and excessive dependency on dummies or thumb-sucking.

Playing it Safe
It is essential to provide your child with a safe place in which to grow up and master the many challenges that will occupy him during the toddler years. Gina offers practical advice about childproofing your home. She draws attention to the high-risk areas in a house and advises on toys and plays equipment, fire-prevention and car safety.

About Gina Ford

My philosophy is simple: it's common sense. It’s based on several premises: first and most important the welfare of your precious baby. Then, your own health and peace of mind as parents – it’s no exaggeration to say that broken nights can turn the sanest of human beings into complete wrecks.  And finally, the happy life of the family which is always better when there is a contented little baby whose schedule integrates well into that of everyone in the family.

I’ve looked after over three hundred babies in the course of my career.  Babies come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments and I think I can safely say I’ve seen them all – and there isn’t one who, in my experience, hasn’t benefited from following my routine.  What I offer is real and practical advice on how to establish a good feeding and sleeping pattern from day one, so that you avoid months of sleepless nights, colic, excessive crying, feeding difficulties and many other problems that we are so often told are a normal part of parenting.

Routines teach you to recognise the difference between hunger and tiredness and how to listen to what your baby is really saying.  They are all about providing your baby with security and comfort, giving him what he wants before he needs to cry and demand it, and the result is a contented little baby who is likely to sleep the longest spell at night at around six to ten weeks.  You’ll also be able to claim a little time back for yourself, which will help you enjoy the experience of parenthood much, much more.  It has worked for hundreds of thousands of parents all over the world and it can work for you too – I promise.
